happy Friday!

Happy Friday!  I hope everyone has a fabulous Memorial Day weekend.  I’m headed to South Carolina for another wedding – should be fun!  I’m so excited about the three day weekend.

I’m loving the bright colors and fullness of the drapes in these pictures, especially the green ones by Ruthie Sommers.

Monograms… yay or nay?

I’m not a big fan of monograms.  I especially don’t like when people put a sticker monogram on their car – why is that necessary?  And on your iPhone?  Is that so nobody steals your phone?

I think monograms should be used sparingly.  My bath towels and guest towels have my monogram on them.  And I think I have one or two pieces of jewelry with my monogram.  That is all.  There is no reason to put your monogram on every single pillow and towel in your house.

Don’t get me wrong, monograms can be pretty – but they can also be tacky.  So before you go put your monogram on everything you own, draw the line somewhere.  Here are some pictures of what I think are good uses of monograms…

A Master Bedroom Makeover

This bedroom belongs to one of my mom’s good friends in Chattanooga.  I helped give her bedroom a little face lift.  I’ve been meaning to post these pictures for months because it was finished about a year ago… Better late than never!

First I will show you the “AFTER” pictures, then we’ll look at the “BEFORE”.  She wanted the room to be simple with lots of blue.  What do y’all think????  It was basically my first design makeover on my own :)

In case you can’t tell, the “AFTER” pictures were taken on my mom’s fancy camera; the “BEFORE” pictures were taken on my iPhone.

AFTER

Newly painted walls, gold leaf sunburst mirror and custom pillow shams.

We had this pretty day bed reupholstered in the blue checked fabric that matches her pillow shams and bedskirt.  The fabric is Schumacher’s Camden cotton check.  My client hung the gallery wall herself.

Greek Key, take 2

I know I’ve already dedicated an entire post to the Greek Key, but it’s a classic symbol that can be incorporated into your life in sooooo many ways.  Therefore, expect more greek key posts in the future.  My last greek key post was over a year ago, anyway.  I’m trying to think of where I have the greek key symbol in my apartment… I don’t think I do.  I guess I’m a hypocrite!?

Cafe Curtains

Cafe curtains are a great way to add privacy without blocking a pretty view or natural light.  We’ve used them often in bathrooms.  I just love the look!

While we’re on the subject of architecture…

Let’s talk about shutters!  I’ve been trying to get my mom to get some shutters for her house forEVER.  Not the little plastic kind that are disproportional to the window – I’m talking about REAL wooden shutters.  With hinges and brackets.  My parents’ house in Chattanooga is white brick (my mom says it’s gray, but if you saw it you would call it white) and I just think black or REALLY dark green (almost black) shutters would be so cute on it.  C’mon, Mom, make it happen! :)  Maybe these pictures will inspire you…

Cornice Boards

After looking at all the chicness that is in The Big Book of Chic, I decided cornice boards are the most fabulous way to dress a window.  It took me a little longer than I expected to look at every single page of the book – but that’s why Miles named it The BIG Book of Chic instead of The Little Book of Chic.

I think a cornice board is a little too formal for my apartment right now, but maybe one day one of my many houses will feature some over the top cornice boards ;)

Miles Redd knows how to design fabulous cornice boards.  And I found evidence that other designers do too.  I can’t think of a more fabulous way to dress a window, can you?

By the way, the pictures now link the their sources.  I’m so high tech :)

Absolutely love all the green!!!

Some cornices don’t serve a purpose – they’re like jewelry for a window :)

So sweet for a little girls room

Love the contrast of the printed fabric and the solid Ivory fabric and tape trim…

I know you’ve probably seen this picture a thousand times before, but it needed to be in my “Cornice Boards” post [Elizabeth Dinkel via Veranda]

Simple, white, shaped cornice boards. You almost don’t even notice them. The first thing I noticed was that cool light fixture. And the black & white abstract art over the mantle.

Blind by the Bamboo

While we’re fresh on the subject of bamboo, I thought I would share one of my all time favorite window treatments… bamboo blinds!  My mom has always been a lover of bamboo blinds, so I began appreciating the look of bamboo shades at a very young age – maybe even before I knew I had a passion for interior design.  Just like bamboo, they look great in any room, no matter how formal or informal.

Before I show you some fabulous pictures of rooms with bamboo blinds, I wanted to share my favorite resources.  Smith+Noble has excellent quality blinds and shades of a variety of natural materials.  They do custom sizes, bindings, linings, and operating mechanisms.  This is Mallory Mathison Inc.‘s source for natural fiber blinds/shades for our clients.  And they have turned out fabulous every time.  However, if you’re like me and you don’t have the pennies to pay for Smith+Noble, you can go to Lowes.  I’m not sure about the custom sizing at Lowes, but you’ll definitely be satisfied with the prices! :)

Roman Shades

Roman shades are a fun window treatment that I’ve always loved.  They’re usually a little more casual than curtains, but it’s easy to dress them up.  You can make them so many different ways:  straight, relaxed, lined, unlined, with trim, without trim… you get the point.

First up is my absolute favorite picture of a roman shade (I’ve been trying to get my mom to do some like this in her bathroom FOREVER):
