Layered Rugs

Layering rugs is such a chic, practical way to cover a floor with a little cushion without splurging on a huge/expensive/antique rug.  Antique rugs are soooo pretty and sooo special but let’s face it – they cost a fortune.  So why not layer a smaller expensive/antique rug on top of an inexpensive seagrass/sisal rug?  A big 9 x 12 antique rug can cost thousands and thousands of dollars; a smaller 4 x 6 / 5 x 7 / 6 x 9 antique rugs can cost just hundreds and hundreds of dollars.  Why not save your money but get the same look?  Here are some great inspiration looks:

I need these stripes in my life.

After Monday’s post I’ve decided to incorporate more stripes in my life.  Why not?  They’re timeless and classic.

I can’t believe I didn’t include a picture of West Elm’s Striped shower curtain in Monday ‘s post, Big Bold Stripes.  I think I’m going to have to order one in Navy or Gray for my apartment…  It also comes in yellow but I’m not really a yellow person.

I also wouldn’t mind incorporating stripes in the form of these Kate Spade wedges

I did just order this striped sweater.

I’ve always been a fan of Dash & Albert’s striped cotton rugs, especially the Yacht stripe… And you can’t beat that price!  Unfortunately, I’ve run out of places to put a rug in my tiny apartment.

New Runner and Good As New Chair

I finally got a runner for the long hallway in my apartment. I’m sure the people who live in the unit below me are grateful. What do y’all think? Black & white + Chevron = Love it! I got it from one of our vendors, but West Elm and Urban Outfitters have similar options.

I also wanted to share the miraculous restoration of a very broken chair. One of my brother’s friends leaned back in one of the dining chairs at my parents cabin and this happened:

But I took it to the Touch Up Guy here in Atlanta and he literally made it good as new! You can’t even tell it was ever broken. Impressive, isn’t it? He even put steel rods in it. Pretty much good as new:

Rockin Moroccan

I just bought this rug from Ikea a few weeks ago.  It fits perfectly next to my bed.  My feet love landing on it first thing when I get out of bed in the morning.  Especially in this cold weather.

If I had more rooms in my apartment I would definitely want to invest in one of West Elm‘s Moroccan inspired rugs for my living room (and move my sisal rug to another room).  And I would walk around barefoot all the time.

And they even have a few rugs that are handmade in Morocco…

On a side note, I continue to be impressed by the new designs that West Elm has come out with recently.  [I even devoted a blog post to it! And mentioned their pretty lighting in another post.]

Anyway, let’s look at some rooms that rock Moroccan rugs…

Those Moroccans make some pretty funky rugs, don’t they?

Fur

Lately all this cold weather has me wishing I had a big fur blanket to cuddle up in.   Atlanta weather has been so sporadic in the last couple of weeks.  One day it will be 73 degrees and then for three days straight the high temperature is like 50.  I can’t decide whether to turn the heat on or not.  I’d love to add a little fur to my apartment somehow… Faux fur, of course :)

Ikea has some great faux fur area rugs like this Tejn rug.  It would be so nice to have one right next to the bed.  My feet would love it first thing in the morning.

If faux blankets/pillows/rugs are too much for your home, perhaps you would like to add a little faux fur to your wardrobe like Kate Moss:

I’ve always wanted to have one of these furry hats but honestly don’t think I would ever wear it.  Think what your hair would look like when you took it off!  [JCrew Toscana Shearling Trapper Hat]

LOVE the furry print on this scarf… Sorry it’s probably not available any more… From One Kings Lane.

Or I looove their Collared Peplum coat in Yellow.  But let’s be honest, you couldn’t wear a bright coat like this too often or you would be “the girl with the yellow fur collared coat”.

I have ALWAYS wanted some furry moccasin slippers like these Dakotas from Ugg Australia.  [hint hint, Santa Claus]

That’s all the fur I have for you today!

Seagrass, Sisal

…and Jute!  I love natural fiber rugs.  I promise they work in both formal and informal interiors.  And here is proof:

I can’t even tell you how many clients of ours have seagrass/sisal runners on their stairs… Love that look.  Seagrass is especially nice on the stairs if you have small children. [image via Benjamin Dhong]

Do you have a massive living room and don’t want to pay 9485967584 dollars for a huge oriental rug?  Go with seagrass!  [Orlando Diaz-Azcuy via House Beautiful]

Designers like Phoebe Howard and Suzanne Kasler are big fans of natural fiber rugs.

One of my favorite ways to use a seagrass rug: layering.  If you have a nice/oriental/antique rug but it’s too small for a space – layer it over a larger seagrass/sisal rug.  Problem solved.

One of my favorite natural fiber rugs, which I just discovered the other day, is Serena & Lily’s Chevron Jute/Hemp rug
