Concrete

This may sound strange but I just love concrete.  What’s not to love about concrete?  Concrete is a composite material with countless uses ranging from building foundation to kitchen countertops.   Not to mention it’s cheap.  Much cheaper than, say, marble.   You could say that concrete has an advantage over marble because it gives that rustic/industrial look that marble can’t quite achieve.

The Skirt: Part 1

Let’s explore the chicness of a skirted sink.  What do y’all think?  It’s a little bit country maybe, but then I’ve always lived in the south.  If I had all the money in the world and a huge house with lots of sinks, I would probably put a skirt on at least one of them.  Maybe in the laundry room or butler’s pantry.  It would make for easy access to the “under sink storage”, wouldn’t it?  And easy access is always a good thing.  But the real reason why I think a skirted sink is fabulous is that I’ll take any chance to use a favorite fabric.

I’m excited to have Summerfield’s first ever guest blogger from Arcadian Home!  I was so flattered to get an email from them saying that they’re a big fan of my little blog.  It’s always so nice to hear when anyone is a fan :)

Hello, everyone! It’s wonderful to be visiting here at Summerfield with a guest post from Arcadian Home blog, where you will find lots of interior design inspiration including fabulous home décor ideas from wall art to mini pendant lighting.

Traditional Twist

This beautiful space feels traditional, but a twist of contemporary and glam takes it beyond that comfortable style. The chunky wood table is a great contemporary piece, while the round tub chairs trimmed in a silvery metallic that’s repeated in the side table add a touch of glam.

Traditional Twist

With traditional bones, treasured table and chairs, along with antique accessories, this dining room goes for much more with the appealing look of Chinoiserie in the fabulous screen and brass side chairs. Tall glass buffet lamps with gold metallic shades are a lovely contrast to the stunning ornate chandelier above the table.

Traditional Twist

In a breathtaking twist, the homeowner/designer asked for a glass greenhouse ceiling inside her new traditional kitchen. She got what she wanted and much more—it’s stunning.

Traditional Twist

This beautifully pale traditional kitchen is bathed in the glow from an ornate crystal chandelier with a contemporary twist—a sheer drum cage covering the upper portion of the light fixture.

Traditional Twist

A lovely mix of cabinetry and contemporary metals infuses this traditional kitchen with style and great functionality. I love the trio of simple pendant lights above the work table/charming dining spot.

Traditional Twist

In a cool twist on traditional farmhouse, this attic bedroom gets a polka dot upholstered bed and contemporary bedding to match.

Traditional Twist

A traditional girl’s bedroom with dark wood four-poster bed shows off a cute twist and one that could be easily implemented. Think paper pom poms, crocheted balls or tiny soft sculptures of just about any sort.

Traditional Twist

Architecturally, this room is totally traditional, but the furnishings are definitely not traditional with simply styled low seating and lots of modern elements. And the biggest twist here is the unexpected gaggle of contemporary lamps emanating from the ornate center ceiling medallion and hanging above the space.

Factory Pendants

We all know that I love my Hicks pendant more than anything.  But theres something about those industrial factory pendants that I love too.  I just love the industrial look.  I bet half of the pictures in my “kitchens” pinterest board are of those factory pendants hanging over the island.

Beautiful Brass

source

Brass finishes are a huge trend right now and I’m so glad.  Most of the time I absolutely prefer a brass finish over any finish on hardware, lighting, plumbing and furniture.  I especially love an antique brass finish.  However, I would be a little hesitant to use brass hardware and plumbing in my own home (as if I have a choice in my apartment!).  I think I’m scared that it’s too trendy and I’ll get sick of it after a while.  But if you think about it, replacing the knobs and pulls in a kitchen or bathroom is really not that big of a deal.  My kitchen and bathroom cabinets don’t even have hardware, otherwise I might consider ordering some of these gorgeous brass pulls from Restoration Hardware:

Utility Latch

Or this pretty antique brass window hardware

And now some pictures that might inspire you to add some antique Brass to your life…

The Little Green Kitchen

My new apartment has a little kitchen.  It has me wishing that it was lacquered in GREEN like Miles Redd’s design below.

Ehh… I’d probably get tired of it.

The paint color is Bamboo Leaf by Fine Paints of Europe.

Hicks Obsession

I hate to point out the obvious, but Visual Comfort’s Hicks pendant light is perfection in the form of a light fixture.  There’s no doubt that Thomas O’Brien is a genius for designing such an awesome piece.  If I had a kitchen with an island, you can bet I would spend my savings on a pair of these gorgeous pendants.  The only problem is that I would never be able to decide what finish!  Antique Nickel, Polished Nickel, Antique Brass, OR Bronze with Brass!?! (I kind of think I would go with the Bronze with Brass).  The fixtures are available through Circa lighting stores.

Please excuse the repetition of pictures from a previous post – they were necessary :)

White Kitchens

This weekend I went home to Chattanooga for the Junior League’s “Tour du Jour”.  There were six different kitchens featured on the tour in different areas of Chattanooga.  Seeing such a variety of styles made me realize how much I really love a plain WHITE kitchen.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a pretty blue or green kitchen, but if I could renovate my own kitchen, I would definitely go with pure white.  Marble countertops, hardwood floors, and industrial light fixtures are added bonuses.  If you look at these pictures, I’m sure you would agree!
