Highlights from London

I’m still alive!  Sorry I’ve been soooo busy lately!  Finally, I wanted to share with y’all some pictures from my favorite castles and sites from my trip to London.  Better late than never!  :)

Hampton Court, Henry VIII’s favorite home.  This place was SOOO cool!  By far one of my favorite things that we did.  I highly recommend going to Hampton Court if you’re making a trip to the London area.

Windsor Castle, the Queen’s weekend home.  During the time that we visited Windsor Castle, the Queen was on her annual vacation to Balmoral Castle in Scotland.  Since the queen was not there, the courtyard below was open to the public, which was beautiful.  The left side of this facade is the queen’s private apartments.

Buckingham Palace.  We went to a few exhibits at Buckingham Palace:  The Queen’s Gallery (her private collection of art), The Royal Muse, and The State Rooms.

I was intriqued by some of the architectural materials used on the very very OLD buildings in England.  Many of the 300+ year old houses and churches are made of “flint”.  Flint is a form of stone that is “knapped” or struck together to break it in half, which creates a flat stone for exterior surfaces:

The Shard is one of the tallest buildings in Great Brittain.  It was built just in the last few years.  We were able to get tickets and go to the top where the view of London is the best!  We could see London Bridge, Tower of London, Millenium Bridge, St. Paul’s, the London Eye, Buckhingham Palace, and much much more.

I spent a couple of nights in Oxford, England, where I visited Christ Church College, where a lot of Harry Potter scenes were filmed.
